ABOUT

Steven Broadway studied at Parsons in NYC in the 80s when street culture, fashion culture and gallery culture created an electric mix that made being an art student very special.

The energy and feeling of infinite possibilities was everywhere. New Yorkers dressed up and socialised nonstop, flirted and danced till dawn while club hopping. Life before the digital revolution allowed people to connect on a more human level and the networking was off the charts.

Madonna, Mapplethorpe, Warhol, Halston, Vreeland, Helmet Newton, Bruce Weber, Kenneth, Paul Block and Antonio lit up our daily lives with mind blowing visuals. Boutiques like Fiorucci was like walking into a party as disco music throbbed from radios and cars day and night, keeping the energy on high.

It was impossible to not be inspired and filled with joy, which allowed him to produce drawings, paintings and photography both for class assignments as well as freelance clients.

Steven has created art for books, magazines and newspapers, illustrated for costume and fashion designers, retail stores, night clubs and has exhibited in galleries as well. Steven’s illustration work is done with graphite, color pencils, markers, watercolor and acrylic paint. His photography is all digital. Steven also draws on his iPad using Procreate.

Steven is passionate about styling his models and is very hands-on preparing his models and posing them for his photoshoots as well as for his drawing classes. He is available to shoot and style for fashion and portraiture.

He has been a faculty member in the school of fashion at both Parsons and FIT for over 25 years, a job he is passionate about. And to support the practice of drawing for his collegues, students and professionals, Steven runs a weekly online live model drawing session: Bwayz Sketch Club.

Steven continues to be energised by NYC’s cultural diversity, his collegues and students along with his travels to faraway destinations.
